Kosher Social Media - FaceGlat

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish 'Facebook' Separates the Sexes

A new social media website launched for the ultra-orthodox jewish community this year. FaceGlat is a way for more modest members of the jewish community to connect online without being exposed to sexually suggestive photographs and advertisements and other "offensive" material. They are even working on a program that can identify and remove photographs showing too much skin. It is a segregated website, with one section for male and another for female members. I have a couple of thoughts on this, the first is that this community has a history of segregating women (remember the photo of the bin laden mission situation room where hilary clinton was removed?) and preventing people from getting valuable information about the real world and this seems to be a continuation of this school of thought. This will really have a detrimental effect in the long run as we modernize around them and move forward as a society. The second thought is that, maybe this actually will be a gateway for this ultra-orthodox community to become more interactive with the real world. Maybe this is an avenue for them to reach out and see that gender equality is important ad sexuality is nothing to be so afraid of. This may encourage people to use the internet who never thought to use it before this. Could be interesting.

What do you think?
